Abstract:
This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil supplementation on weight loss and body composition in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies published up to October 2014. RCTs comparing the effects of MCT oil supplementation with long-chain triglycerides (LCT) oil or control (e.g., placebo) on weight loss and body composition parameters in adults were included. Data were pooled using a random-effects model, and subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential sources of heterogeneity. A total of 13 RCTs involving 657 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The results revealed that MCT oil supplementation significantly promoted weight loss compared to LCT oil or control (mean difference: -0.51 kg; 95% CI: -0.80 to -0.23 kg; P < 0.001). Furthermore, MCT oil supplementation was associated with reductions in body fat mass (mean difference: -0.77 kg; 95% CI: -1.25 to -0.29 kg; P = 0.002) and waist circumference (mean difference: -1.26 cm; 95% CI: -2.03 to -0.49 cm; P = 0.001). No significant differences were observed in lean body mass or total body water. Subgroup analyses suggested that the dosage and duration of MCT oil supplementation may influence its effects on weight loss and body composition.
